Chapter Twenty-Two:

Childhood Memories

Gwen had just opened the bakery when Daniel called on the telephone. Shocked by the news, she took a sharp breath.

“We have to do something. We have to try.”

“Inspector Rawlings isn’t stopping, Gwen. I think we should hang on.”

She nodded silently to herself. “But we could at least get a search party organised.”

Part of Daniel wanted to agree with her, but he knew it could interfere and even jeopardise Faye’s safety if they impeded the investigation.

“I really think you should talk to the inspector first. You don’t want to go trampling on evidence, or worse still, get caught up with some sinister characters and make even more trouble!”

As if deaf to Daniel’s words of wisdom, she straightened her back. “If you ask me, I think Bill Green is mixed up in all this!”

Daniel’s eyebrows furrowed, “What makes you say that?”

“He met Terrance in the tearoom on the day the cyclists were there. I didn’t recognise him at first. It’s been years since I’ve seen him. But he was with him. They were in the corner, and there were mysterious pieces of straw on the table where they were sitting.”

“Have you told Inspector Rawlings?”

“Oh, Tom was in the tearoom when I noticed it. He must have made the connection as he rushed out on business once he saw the straw.”

Daniel suddenly remembered the conversation he had with Faye about the rare birds’ eggs being poached. Knowing Faye could have inadvertently gotten caught up in it made him feel sick with fear.

“This is a horrible business. Maybe we could put our heads together and at least try to come up with something useful to help the investigation.”

Gwen pumped the air with her hand, thrilled to get Daniel agreeing to try something.

“Yes! Can you come over to the bakery now?”

After a moment of silence on the telephone, he said. “I’ll call work to let them know I’m taking a few days’ holiday, and I’ll be right over.”

Gwen already had tea and cakes laid out when Daniel came through the bakery door. She led him to the parlor, and he sat down on the chair uneasily.

Pouring out the tea, she pushed a cup over to Daniel. The mood somber, she said, “Do you think Faye is in danger?”

He blinked slowly, the curves of his mouth drawn back in fear at the reality of the situation. “I think she could be in real danger.”

Gwen sat up straight. “Well, there’s no time to lose, then! What do we know so far?”

“I think it has something to do with Grimmer Point and smuggling birds’ eggs.”

She watched Daniel grip the handle of the teacup so tightly that she thought it would break in two.

“What do you mean, smuggling birds’ eggs?”

“Well, the other day, Faye came home and was talking about Grimmer Point and finding a wooden box.”

He looked crestfallen. “I told her it may have been for smuggling the eagles’ eggs.”

Gwen suddenly became animated. “Of course! Why didn’t I think of it before? It all fits.
